...when you go to the community supper and there are two dishes of scalloped potatoes, one with ham, and one with chunks of toast pork! LOL!
Of course, we have a pork processing plant just a few miles north of us, and most of the farmers in the area raise corn for hog feed. Nebraska's nickname is the 'Beef State' and when I was a lad, in northern Kansas, just twelve miles from the Kansas-Nebraska line, a derogatory term for Nebraskans was 'Beefer'.
It's still true that Nebraska still leads the nation in beef production, but the State is number six in pork production as well. Part of the reason that beef still predominates, of course, is geography. The western portion of Nebraska is high desert grassland, not particularly suited for anything but stock grazing, so it's likely that the Beef State moniker will continue to be well deserved, but the eastern counties, where I live, might adopt the sobriquet 'Pork Country'!

Comments are subject to deletion if they are not germane. I have no problem with a bit of colourful language, but blasphemy or depraved profanity will not be allowed. Attacks on the Catholic Faith will not be tolerated. Comments will be deleted that are republican (Yanks! Note the lower case 'r'!), attacks on the legitimacy of Pope Francis as the Vicar of Christ (I know he's a material heretic and a Protector of Perverts, and I definitely want him gone yesterday! However, he is Pope, and I pray for him every day.), the legitimacy of the House of Windsor or of the claims of the Elder Line of the House of France, or attacks on the legitimacy of any of the currently ruling Houses of Europe.
