Off the Menu: Episode 9 - Ultra-Realism, LOTR, and Counterrevolution

Originally uploaded 10 October 2016. I have previously shared the excerpts on The Lord of the Rings and Joseph de Maistre. The Chevalier answers a question on the Presidential Debate that had just taken place.

The discuss of Oligarchies vs Monarchies is powerful! He points out that oligarchies may be legitimated by religion and tradition, but that the oligarchy in the US is illegitimate and  limited by nothing.

A personal observation on the discussion of the LOTR movies. I agree with the Chevalier's assessment that it was an excellent example of filmmaking, but had little or nothing to do with the books Tolkien wrote. I strongly agree with his advice to never let anyone see the movies without having read the books!

In re: his discussion of 'ultra-realism'. Philosophy is possibly the only thing on which I violently disagree with the Chevalier. He is a Platonist, an ultra-realist. I, on the other hand, am a convinced Aristotelian-Thomist. Thomism is the preferred Philosophy of the Church, and I will follow the Church's preference.

However, on the subjects of de Maistre and the Counter Revolution, I am absolutely in agreement with him. I encourage my readers to look into the writers he mentions. His tip on using Google Translate is brilliant!

1.) Presidential Election 0:11 2.) Oligarchies vs Monarchies 6:00 3.) The Lord of the Rings 12:42 4.) Can Ultra-Realism be popular again? 22:28 5.) Joseph de Maistre & counterrevolution 26:25

Comments are subject to deletion if they are not germane. I have no problem with a bit of colourful language, but blasphemy or depraved profanity will not be allowed. Attacks on the Catholic Faith will not be tolerated. Comments will be deleted that are republican (Yanks! Note the lower case 'r'!), attacks on the legitimacy of Pope Francis as the Vicar of Christ (I know he's a material heretic and a Protector of Perverts, and I definitely want him gone yesterday! However, he is Pope, and I pray for him every day.), the legitimacy of the House of Windsor or of the claims of the Elder Line of the House of France, or attacks on the legitimacy of any of the currently ruling Houses of Europe.
