What Were the Crusades?

An excellent video from Real Crusades History that actually discusses the Crusade Indulgence intelligently! He implies that the last Crusading Indulgence was granted for the Great Turkish War of 1683-1699, of which I can find no proof. However, if true, it makes the Crusading period last almost exactly 500 years, from 1095 until 1699.

If not, it is definite that the Indulgence was in effect in Spain until the Conquest of Granada in 1492.

He points out that, whilst most people think of only the Eastern Crusades to the Holy Land when they hear the term, there were Crusades in Iberia, in the Baltic North, and in Langue d'Oc against the Manichaean Cathari.

Comments are subject to deletion if they are not germane. I have no problem with a bit of colourful language, but blasphemy or depraved profanity will not be allowed. Attacks on the Catholic Faith will not be tolerated. Comments will be deleted that are republican (Yanks! Note the lower case 'r'!), attacks on the legitimacy of Pope Francis as the Vicar of Christ (I know he's a material heretic and a Protector of Perverts, and I definitely want him gone yesterday! However, he is Pope, and I pray for him every day.), the legitimacy of the House of Windsor or of the claims of the Elder Line of the House of France, or attacks on the legitimacy of any of the currently ruling Houses of Europe.
