Venerable Andrej's Sacred Walking Stick

An absolutely wonderful article from Father Athanasius McVay, Priest and Church historian specialising in the history of the Holy See's diplomacy and of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church in the XIX and XX centuries. Fellow of the Chair of Ukrainian Studies, University of Toronto. His blog 'Annales Ecclesiae Ucrainae' is linked in the side bar, and I highly recommend it.

It is on Venerable Andrey Sheptytsky's 'Sacred Walking Stick'. Venerable Andrey or Kyr Andrey was a monk of the Order of St Basil the Great, and Metropolitan Archbishop of Lviv and head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. The Metropolitan See has been moved to Kyiv, the ancient seat of the Ukrainian Church and is occupied by the Major Archbishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, Sviatoslav Shevchuk, who was the first Head of the Church to be enthroned in Kyiv in over 400 years.

Kyr Andrey's appeal to the Christians
of the world to protest the Ukrainian
Genocide or the Holodomor.

  1. Patriarch. Not Major Archbishop, as if such a thing existed. Who are the minor archbishops..?

    1. I agree, but Father Athanasius is an official representative of the Church in his capacity as a professor, and he follows the official line.

  2. Oh yes, the *official* line. But only of the Vatican.

Comments are subject to deletion if they are not germane. I have no problem with a bit of colourful language, but blasphemy or depraved profanity will not be allowed. Attacks on the Catholic Faith will not be tolerated. Comments will be deleted that are republican (Yanks! Note the lower case 'r'!), attacks on the legitimacy of Pope Francis as the Vicar of Christ (I know he's a material heretic and a Protector of Perverts, and I definitely want him gone yesterday! However, he is Pope, and I pray for him every day.), the legitimacy of the House of Windsor or of the claims of the Elder Line of the House of France, or attacks on the legitimacy of any of the currently ruling Houses of Europe.
