I missed this two days ago. On 12 February, in the year 842, brothers, Ludwig II "the German", King of the Franks in the East, and Charles "the Bald", King of the Franks in the West, swear the Oath of Strasbourg, which pledges of allegiance and cooperation between the rulers of East and West Francia.
The Oath was recited in Old French and High Old German, and were written in three languages: Medieval Latin, Old French and Old High German.
The Old French passages are considered to be the earliest texts in a distinctly French language.
