Word of the Day: Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life

CONGREGATION FOR INSTITUTES OF CONSECRATED LIFE AND SOCIETIES OF APOSTOLIC LIFE. Originally established by Pope Sixtus V in 1588, it was reorganized by Pope Pius X in 1908. Its competence extends to all religious orders and congregations, societies of common life, secular institutes, third orders--whether of men or women. It has no territorial limits, and no questions pertaining to a life of perfection need be remitted to other Roman congregations. It has power of dispensation and, as required, important affairs, such as the approval of constitutions, quinquennial reports and formation, are confided to various commissions. In 1967 it established a School of Practical Law for Religious. Since 1975 it has issued its own official quarterly Informationes, published in English as Consecrated Life by the Institute on Religious Life. (Chicago).

On May 27, 1586, Pope Sixtus V founded the Sacred Congregation for Consultations about Regulars. In 1908 Pope Pius X changed its name to the Congregation for Religious. In 1967 Pope Paul VI changed its name to the Congregation for Religious and Secular Institutes. Pope John Paul II gave the Congregation its current name.

The Congregation is responsible for everything which concerns religious orders and congregations, and societies of apostolic life regarding their government, discipline, studies, etc. It is competent also for matters regarding hermits, consecrated virgins, and new forms of consecrated life. It has no territorial limits, although certain questions may be remanded to other Vatican Congregations. The Congregation also handles matters concerning associations of the faithful formed with the intention of becoming institutes of consecrated life or societies of apostolic life, and for Third Orders Secular.
