Luxembourg’s Heir Makes a Special Promise in the Presence of a King

A double monarchist connection to Scouting.

Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume of Luxembourg has become head of his country’s Scout movement, following in the footsteps of his beloved grandfather, Jean, who died earlier this year. And Guillaume took his promise in the presence of the Honourary Chairman of the World Scout Foundation, King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.

The Swedish monarch joined around 3000 Scouts from across Luxembourg as well as other representatives from the world Scouting movement at a ceremony on October 4th 2019 to see Guillaume make his promise as he took on the role of Chief Scout. Guillaume’s wife, Stephanie, was also present.

The Hereditary Grand Duke has now taken on a role that was a major part of his grandfather’s life. Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg made his own promise in October 1945, soon after the end of World War Two, and remained an active supporter of the Scouting movement in his country for the following 74 years. He was often seen attending Scout events in Luxembourg and around the world.

The movement in Luxembourg is made up of the FNEL and LGS for Scouts and Guides. Guillaume is now head of both organisations which count on around 8,000 members across the country. He became a scout himself at the age of 8 and has spoken several times about how important the skills he learned in the organisation have been to him throughout his life.

The World Scout Foundation, based in Geneva, supports the Scouting movement globally. Guillaume joined that organisation two years ago and and has worked with King Carl XVI Gustaf on a number of occasions in that role. The King of Sweden is a passionate supporter of the movement and has spoken previously about his beliefs that being a scout or guide can help young people learn leadership and peace making skills.
