  • 1230 – Bulgarian Tsar Ivan Asen II defeats Theodore of Epirus in the Battle of Klokotnitsa.
  • 1440 – St Frances of Rome died (b. 1384)
  • 1541 - François I gives Jean-François de La Roque de Roberval c1500-1560 a grant of £40,000 livres and appoints him "Viceroy of the Kingdom of Canada, as well as Hochelaga, Saguenay, Newfoundland, Belle Isle, Cap Rouge, Labrador, the Great Bay and Baccalaos"; authorizes him to take a boatload of convicts to Canada to assist in founding a colony; Jacques Cartier ordered to go ahead to prepare the way for Roberval; Cartier puts to sea, on May 23, 1541.   • 1776 – The Wealth of Nations by Scottish economist and philosopher Adam Smith is published. A black day!
  • 1873 - John A Macdonald government proposes establishment of a Mounted Police force for the North West Territories; act passed May 23. The birth of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
  • 1925 – Pink's War: The first Royal Air Force operation conducted independently of the British Army or Royal Navy begins.
