  • 1239 – Vladimir IV Rurikovich, Grand Prince of Kiev, died (b. 1187)
  • 1605 – Clement VIII, Pope, died (b. 1536)
  • March 3, 1722 - Council divides New France into parishes; Québec has 41, Three Rivers 13 and Montréal 28. Québec, Québec
  • 1847 – Alexander Graham Bell, Scottish-American engineer and academic, invented the telephone, born (d. 1922)
  • 1861 – Alexander II of Russia signs the Emancipation Manifesto, freeing serfs.
  • 1875 – The first ever organised indoor game of ice hockey is played in Montreal, Quebec, Canada as recorded in the Montreal Gazette.
  • March 3, 1915 - Troops from Alberta are part of the Canadian Division which entered the line on the Western Front. France
  • 1918 – Russia signs the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, agreeing to withdraw from World War I, and conceding German control of the Baltic States, Belarus and Ukraine. It also conceded Turkish control of Ardahan, Kars and Batumi.
  • March 3, 1921 - University of Toronto doctors Frederick Banting and Charles Best officially announces their team's discovery of insulin. Toronto, Ontario
  • 1983 – Hergé, Belgian author and illustrator, creator of Tintin, one of my favourite comics character, died (b. 1907)
  • 1986 – The Australia Act 1986 commences, causing Australia to become fully independent from the United Kingdom.
