The Two Angels in the Empty Tomb Are Hiding a Secret Most Christians Missed

Why does John tell us exactly where the two angels at Jesus' tomb were sitting? Mary Magdalene bends down, looks in, and sees two angels where the body had been, one at the head and one at the feet. Most people read that as scenery. Critics point at it as a contradiction, because Matthew says an angel, Mark says a young man, Luke says two men in dazzling clothes. But not one of the four Gospels says only, and John is describing a different moment later that morning, when Mary was left alone at the tomb weeping. Once you see what those two seated angels are doing, you will not be able to unsee it. Fifteen centuries earlier, in a tent in the desert, God commanded two cherubim of gold, one at each end of the kapporet, the mercy seat, the lid whose name shares a root with Yom Kippur. Once a year, blood was sprinkled in the space between them, and God promised: from between the two cherubim, I will speak to you. By the time of Jesus, the ark was gone, and the holiest room on earth had bare floor where the mercy seat used to be. Then on Easter morning, two living figures sat at either end of an empty slab, and a voice met a weeping woman in the space between them and said her name.
