The musings and meandering thoughts of a crotchety old man as he observes life in the world and in a small, rural town in South East Nebraska. My Pledge-Nulla dies sine linea-Not a day with out a line.

Word of the Day: Wake
WAKE. A watch or vigil. The term was originally applied to the all-night
vigil in Anglo-Saxon times before certain major holidays. By the sixteenth century
it was used of the holiday itself, and of the fair held to honor a local saint.
In some countries, e.g., Ireland, a wake is the watch over the body of the deceased
before burial. And more commonly a wake is the period, one or two days before
the funeral, when mourners may visit the body of the deceased and offer their
condolences to the bereaved. The Church now provides for a liturgical service,
if so desired, during the wake. It is called Vigil for the Deceased.

Comments are subject to deletion if they are not germane. I have no problem with a bit of colourful language, but blasphemy or depraved profanity will not be allowed. Attacks on the Catholic Faith will not be tolerated. Comments will be deleted that are republican (Yanks! Note the lower case 'r'!), attacks on the legitimacy of Pope Francis as the Vicar of Christ (I know he's a material heretic and a Protector of Perverts, and I definitely want him gone yesterday! However, he is Pope, and I pray for him every day.), the legitimacy of the House of Windsor or of the claims of the Elder Line of the House of France, or attacks on the legitimacy of any of the currently ruling Houses of Europe.
