9 November 1989 - The Fall of the Berlin Wall

Thirty-two years ago tonight, I was at work as the front desk receptionist for a large engineering firm. My wife called me and said, 'You won't believe what is happening!' She held the phone up to the TV so I could hear the reports of the Berlin Wall falling! I started to cry. Fellow employees walking by asked me what was wrong. Through my tears, I answered that the Wall was coming down! Within minutes, my desk was surrounded by my co-workers and I was relaying what I was hearing.

I well remembered 13 August 1961, when it went up, with crowds of Germans on both sides waiting for the Allied tanks to roll and destroy this absolute violation of the Four-Power Pact on Berlin. For reasons, never revealed, Kennedy, Macmillan, and de Gaulle decided to let the Soviet slave masters get away with it. I never expected to live to see it come down within my lifetime!

Our children were quite small at the time, but the next day as images of the destruction of the Wall were broadcast, I made them watch TV. They were bored, but I told them that someday they could tell their grandchildren that they had seen the Berlin Wall come down.

It was the beginning of the end for the Evil Empire. We thought we were rid of the curse of Marxism. Little did we know that thirty years later it would come back, which, like Satan, 'as a roaring lion, goeth about seeking whom he may devour', in our own countries.
