The Day the Gauge Changed

I was born in a division point on the Union Pacific Railroad. My grandfather and a cousin were killed on the UP, one uncle retired on the sick list and another uncle just retired, both from the UP. Yet another uncle spent his working life with the US Post Office Railway Mail Service, sorting mail on the UP. I was the traitor!

When I went to work for a railroad it was with the Santa Fe as a dispatch clerk. I showed up for my first day of work wearing a UP belt buckle and a UP bolo tie. I got some strange looks as I walked into the Chief Clerks office to report. After I explained that it was in homage to my forebears and said I wouldn't do it again, it was OK!

I suppose my family and personal history with railroading is why I found this video fascinating.

Comments are subject to deletion if they are not germane. I have no problem with a bit of colourful language, but blasphemy or depraved profanity will not be allowed. Attacks on the Catholic Faith will not be tolerated. Comments will be deleted that are republican (Yanks! Note the lower case 'r'!), attacks on the legitimacy of Pope Francis as the Vicar of Christ (I know he's a material heretic and a Protector of Perverts, and I definitely want him gone yesterday! However, he is Pope, and I pray for him every day.), the legitimacy of the House of Windsor or of the claims of the Elder Line of the House of France, or attacks on the legitimacy of any of the currently ruling Houses of Europe.
