| BANNEZIANISM. Theory of the relationship of divine grace and human freedom, developed by Dominic Banez (1528-1604), Spanish Dominican philosopher and theologian. In this theory, God foresees futuribles (hypothetical future events depending on human freedom) and free futures (actual future events determined by the human will) in his predetermining decrees. He physically premoves the free created will to one course of action. This physical predetermination occurs naturally with a person's natural use of the will. In the supernatural order, it is actual efficacious grace for the human will. Without this premotion, the will cannot act in this way. Consequently what we fail to do and our sins are also known in God's predetermining decrees. The principal rival theory is known as Molinism, which originated with the Jesuit Louis Molina. |
