ROSE. An emblem of the Blessed Virgin, often referred to as the Mystical Rose. Mary's rose emblem is rendered as a design with five petals signifying Mary's five joys, "I was exalted like the rose plant in Jericho" (Ecclesiasticus 24:18). Mary's Rosary is symbolized by white, red, and yellow roses corresponding to the joyous, sorrowful, and glorious mysteries. St. Thérèse of Lisieux has her crucifix covered with a profusion of roses as her well-known emblem, reminiscent of the shower of roses she promised to send her friends on earth. St. Elizabeth of Hungary is also symbolized in art with roses, disguising her offerings to the poor. St. Dorothy is represented with a laden basket of roses, the miraculous gift she is reported to have sent the pagan Theophilus, who mocked her on the way to martyrdom. Rose-colored vestments may be used instead of purple on the third Sunday of Advent (Gaudete Sunday) and the fourth Sunday of Lent (Laetare Sunday). The liturgy of these Sundays is joyful. |
The musings and meandering thoughts of a crotchety old man as he observes life in the world and in a small, rural town in South East Nebraska. My Pledge-Nulla dies sine linea-Not a day with out a line.

Comments are subject to deletion if they are not germane. I have no problem with a bit of colourful language, but blasphemy or depraved profanity will not be allowed. Attacks on the Catholic Faith will not be tolerated. Comments will be deleted that are republican (Yanks! Note the lower case 'r'!), attacks on the legitimacy of Pope Francis as the Vicar of Christ (I know he's a material heretic and a Protector of Perverts, and I definitely want him gone yesterday! However, he is Pope, and I pray for him every day.), the legitimacy of the House of Windsor or of the claims of the Elder Line of the House of France, or attacks on the legitimacy of any of the currently ruling Houses of Europe.
