Who Knew?

That the lyrics to 'Land of Hope and Glory', masterfully performed here by Dame Vera Lynn (1917-2020), whose funeral was yesterday, were written by A.C. Benson, the brother of Msgr Robert Hugh Benson, author of Lord of the World and other great Catholic novels? The music, of course, was written by Sir Edgar Elgar and is best known in the US as 'Pomp and Circumstance'.

  1. Apparently Sir Edward(!) didn't care for the lyrics, which he thought too jingoistic.

It seems he was quite fond of the Germans.

  2. In 1901 I think probably the majority of Britishers were 'quite fond' of the Germans. The Entente Cordiale was still three years away, the French were the hereditary enemy and had been for centuries and Wilhelm was Queen Victoria's grandson and the nephew of Edward VII. It took the Great War to change their minds.

Comments are subject to deletion if they are not germane. I have no problem with a bit of colourful language, but blasphemy or depraved profanity will not be allowed. Attacks on the Catholic Faith will not be tolerated. Comments will be deleted that are republican (Yanks! Note the lower case 'r'!), attacks on the legitimacy of Pope Leo XIV as the Vicar of Christ, the legitimacy of the House of Windsor or of the claims of the Elder Line of the House of France, or attacks on the legitimacy of any of the currently ruling Houses of Europe.
