Sona Lá Fhéile Pádraig!

Today is the Feast of St Patrick, Patron of Ireland. It is a Holy Day of Obligation in Ireland, both in the Republic and in Northern Ireland. The drunken 'celebrations' in which 'everyone is Irish for a day' and 'Kiss Me I'm Irish' T-shirts abound, are an American invention which, unfortunately, has been imported into Ireland. Even more unfortunately, much else has also been imported from America, undermining the Faith and the Irish national identity.
.Naomh Pádraig, Guigh Éirinn!

Especially as Ireland approaches the referendum to attempt to 'legalise' the murder of the unborn, let us invoke Her Patron. Here is a novena to St Patrick to pray for the defeat of the baby killers. (Novena page will open in a new tab)

His most famous prayer, and a favourite of mine is variously called the 'Deer's Cry', or the 'Lorica' or 'Breastplate' of St Patrick, lorica being the Latin for breastplate.

Here it is in the Old Irish, as Naomh Pádraig wrote it.

And here it is in the English:

I bind to myself today
The strong virtue of the Invocation of the Trinity:
I believe the Trinity in the Unity
The Creator of the Universe.
I bind to myself today
The virtue of the Incarnation of Christ with His Baptism,
The virtue of His crucifixion with His burial,
The virtue of His Resurrection with His Ascension,
The virtue of His coming on the Judgement Day.
I bind to myself today
The virtue of the love of seraphim,
In the obedience of angels,
In the hope of resurrection unto reward,
In prayers of Patriarchs,
In predictions of Prophets,
In preaching of Apostles,

In faith of Confessors,
In purity of holy Virgins,
In deeds of righteous men.
I bind to myself today
The power of Heaven,
The light of the sun,
The brightness of the moon,
The splendour of fire,
The flashing of lightning,
The swiftness of wind,
The depth of sea,
The stability of earth,
The compactness of rocks.
I bind to myself today
God's Power to guide me,
God's Might to uphold me,
God's Wisdom to teach me,
God's Eye to watch over me,
God's Ear to hear me,
God's Word to give me speech,
God's Hand to guide me,
God's Way to lie before me,
God's Shield to shelter me,
God's Host to secure me,
Against the snares of demons,
Against the seductions of vices,
Against the lusts of nature,
Against everyone who meditates injury to me,
Whether far or near,
Whether few or with many.
I invoke today all these virtues
Against every hostile merciless power
Which may assail my body and my soul,
Against the incantations of false prophets,
Against the black laws of heathenism,
Against the false laws of heresy,
Against the deceits of idolatry,
Against the spells of women, and smiths, and druids,
Against every knowledge that binds the soul of man.
Christ, protect me today
Against every poison, against burning,
Against drowning, against death-wound,
That I may receive abundant reward.
Christ with me, Christ before me,
Christ behind me, Christ within me,
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ at my right, Christ at my left,
Christ in the fort,
Christ in the chariot seat,
Christ in the poop [deck],
Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks to me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.
I bind to myself today
The strong virtue of an invocation of the Trinity,
I believe the Trinity in the Unity
The Creator of the Universe.

The Lord is salvation,
The Lord is salvation,
Christ is salvation.
Your salvation, O Lord, be always with us.

You have mocked me saying "I wish to see Jesus!" Open your eyes then and behold! Christ is here before you! --Saint Patrick upon presenting the Eucharist to Aengus, High King of Ireland at the king's conversion.

And, as much as I love the land of my Mother's birth, the treatment of the Irish by the English heretics was a cruel evil. In honour of those who stood steadfast for their Faith and their Nation, here's 'The Wearin' O' The Green'.

Comments are subject to deletion if they are not germane. I have no problem with a bit of colourful language, but blasphemy or depraved profanity will not be allowed. Attacks on the Catholic Faith will not be tolerated. Comments will be deleted that are republican (Yanks! Note the lower case 'r'!), attacks on the legitimacy of Pope Francis as the Vicar of Christ (I know he's a material heretic and a Protector of Perverts, and I definitely want him gone yesterday! However, he is Pope, and I pray for him every day.), the legitimacy of the House of Windsor or of the claims of the Elder Line of the House of France, or attacks on the legitimacy of any of the currently ruling Houses of Europe.
