Merry Christmas from Menards

Good on Menard's! Remember Jesus is the reason for the season! Keep Christ in CHRISTmas. And keep the Mass in ChristMASS.

Recently, my company asked me to go shopping.

Our R&D group out of Japan was looking to test some surfactants from the U.S. found in common soap, like dishwasher detergent. Surfactant is used to keep polymers from coagulating in a specific type of developer bath we use. I found an abundance of an appropriate detergent at Menard’s, so I bought-up a bunch at three different stores in the NW suburbs of Chicago.

Point of the post is that each store was boldly and publicly proclaiming “Merry Christmas!” on all their bags; at least the ones I could see…and I was looking. The store is not national, but with over 300 stores mostly in the Midwest, I still think it takes some guts in this age of inclusivity.

Even on a secular level, I don’t understand the reluctance to say “Merry Christmas” publicly, other than an intentional war on Christmas.  I get trying to be more inclusive, but unlike Easter for example, Christmas is a Federal (and therefore public) holiday, and the only Federal/Public holiday in the month of December, so does it make any sense to avoid speaking of it?

If yes, then “Happy 4th of July” can be next. I think people can be found who are not “Happy” about the birth of the United States. What about their feelings?
