Under the town hall of Bremen, Germany, there is a cellar that has been storing wine without interruption since the year 1405. The oldest barrel down there was filled in 1653, and the last outsider reportedly allowed to taste it was Queen Elizabeth the Second, in 1978. That room has held a steady temperature for six hundred years using nothing but stone, earth, and slowly moving air.
The refrigerator in your kitchen costs you between 80 and 240 dollars a year to do a worse version of the same job. And the basement under your house probably cannot get through a single summer without a dehumidifier running in the corner.
