MM Video: The May Queen
She was born a Princess of Belgium, daughter of King Albert I, in 1906. She married Prince Umberto of Piedmont in 1930 and in the aftermath of World War II she became the last Queen of Italy when her husband succeeded to the throne as King Umberto II. Because it lasted such a short time, in a certain month, she became known as the "May Queen". After the fall of the monarchy the Queen lived in Mexico for a time but spent most of the rest of her life in Switzerland where she died in 2001 at the age of 94 from lung cancer. Her death has been credited with helping influence the Italian government to lift their ban on the former Royal Family returning to Italy.
