The Hiddenness of God

Matthew 7:7, 'Ask, and the gift will come; seek, and you shall find; knock, and the door shall be opened to you.'

If I was God’s PR assistant, I’d say, God we’ve gotta get the real you out there, we’ve got to overwhelm people with your majesty and glory. If you want followers and disciples, we need to show them what they’re missing. Why is there this deafening silence when we contemplate if he’s there or not? Why doesn’t God make himself obvious to us or even overwhelm us with his presence so that his Glory and divinity were undeniable and we couldn’t help but worship him? The Bible records that God’s glory is so intense that to be exposed to a full blast of it would kill us if it’s done in a premature way and scripture records over and over again that when people were exposed to even a notion of God’s presence, they were terrified. That’s not the starting point for an intimate, loving relationship with someone. We can’t even stare at the sun without that exposure injuring us because it is a source of power that if unrestrained and unfiltered is actually quite dangerous. How much more so for the power that created it as well as the entire universe. So, God, if he’s going to reveal himself to us, has to do so in a filtered way so that we can encounter him without our faces melting off and that filter is the incarnation of Jesus. He became one of us so that we could handle his presence.

Comments are subject to deletion if they are not germane. I have no problem with a bit of colourful language, but blasphemy or depraved profanity will not be allowed. Attacks on the Catholic Faith will not be tolerated. Comments will be deleted that are republican (Yanks! Note the lower case 'r'!), attacks on the legitimacy of Pope Francis as the Vicar of Christ (I know he's a material heretic and a Protector of Perverts, and I definitely want him gone yesterday! However, he is Pope, and I pray for him every day.), the legitimacy of the House of Windsor or of the claims of the Elder Line of the House of France, or attacks on the legitimacy of any of the currently ruling Houses of Europe.
