Word of the Day: Action Française

ACTION FRANÇAISE. French political movement begun in 1899 by the freethinker Charles Maurras to re-establish the monarchy. It held that Catholicism is essential to French civilization. Its paper, L'Action Française, was put on the Index by Pope Pius XI in 1926.

Father makes the same mistake that Chevalier Charles Coulombe made in his discussion of Action Française. It was not founded or begun by M. Maurras! Whilst he was, without doubt its most well-known member and leading thinker, it was founded by Maurice Pujo and Henri Vaugeois.

Also, whilst mentioning that L'Action Française was placed on the Index by Pope Pius XI, Father neglects to mention that one of Pope Pius XII's first actions on becoming Pope was to remove the paper from the Index.

Comments are subject to deletion if they are not germane. I have no problem with a bit of colourful language, but blasphemy or depraved profanity will not be allowed. Attacks on the Catholic Faith will not be tolerated. Comments will be deleted that are republican (Yanks! Note the lower case 'r'!), attacks on the legitimacy of Pope Leo XIV as the Vicar of Christ, the legitimacy of the House of Windsor or of the claims of the Elder Line of the House of France, or attacks on the legitimacy of any of the currently ruling Houses of Europe.
