Word of the Day: Act of Contrition

ACT OF CONTRITION. The prayer of the penitent in the sacrament of penance, by which he expresses sorrow for the sins confessed before receiving absolution. In general, an act of repentance for having offended God.

Father is a bit limited in his definition! It is true that the Act of Contrition is, 'The prayer of the penitent in the sacrament of penance', but it is much more than that.

The Spiritual Doctors recommend frequent recitation of the Act. I recite it at least once every day, just before I go to sleep, and I try to recite it frequently during the day.

The form of the Act I recite is, 'O My God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, because by my sins I have lost heaven and deserved hell, but most of all because I have offended Thee, Who art the most infinite Good. I firmly resolve, by the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance for them, and to avoid the occasion of sin'.

Comments are subject to deletion if they are not germane. I have no problem with a bit of colourful language, but blasphemy or depraved profanity will not be allowed. Attacks on the Catholic Faith will not be tolerated. Comments will be deleted that are republican (Yanks! Note the lower case 'r'!), attacks on the legitimacy of Pope Francis as the Vicar of Christ (I know he's a material heretic and a Protector of Perverts, and I definitely want him gone yesterday! However, he is Pope, and I pray for him every day.), the legitimacy of the House of Windsor or of the claims of the Elder Line of the House of France, or attacks on the legitimacy of any of the currently ruling Houses of Europe.
