Off the Menu: Episode 35 - Laid Back

An excellent episode! All over the place as they say. The first question on Old Slavonic, also known as Old Church Slavonic. Old Church Slavic, or Old Slavic, is a good one. He discusses the Glagolitic alphabet, the oldest known Slavic alphabet, and its probable development by Ss Cyril and Methodius, Equals to the Apostles and Apostles of the Slavs, to aid them in converting the Moravians (the Cuter & Shorter Half's 'Bohemian' ancestry is quite probably actually Moravian!).

That leads to a discussion of the Glagolitic Mass, (I do not suggest doing an online search for 'Glagolitic Mass! A famous Czech composer wrote a Mass called by that name, and the first several pages of Google all link to articles and videos dealing with that) and whether or not it is still celebrated, and if not, are their efforts to revive it.

For those unfamiliar with the Glagolitic Mass, it is the Tridentine Mass, translated into and celebrated in Old Church Slavonic. It was celebrated in Croatia in a few places until the 'deforms' of Vatican II. Even tho' it was 'suppressed' at that point, there are attempts to revive it. Here is an article from two years ago on a celebration of the Mass in Zagreb from The New Liturgical Movement.

The next question is easily answered because the Glagolitic Mass is the only example of an authorised translation of the Tridentine Mass and Old Church Slavonic is no more a vernacular than is Latin. It is used as a liturgical language by some Eastern Churches of the Byzantine Rite, and by some of the Slavic Orthodox Churches, but is no longer intelligible to speakers of modern Slavic languages.

The discussion of the Green Scapular is very good. He points out that it is the only scapular (it's actually a badge, since a scapular has two parts, front and back, worn over the shoulders) is the only one not requiring a special blessing and that does not need to be worn by the person. It is also the only one that can be carried, with effect, by non-Catholics.

Its virtue is conversion, and he points out that it can be given to anyone for whose conversion one is praying. It can also simply be left in the house in which the person lives in an inconspicuous place.

I've shared the 'Benedict Option' question, and in fact, linked to it in my post Sandro Magister on 'The Benedict Option' yesterday.

Friar Rush is a mediaeval folk tale about Satan disguising himself as a monk and infiltrating a monastery. The Chevalier uses it to point out that the men of the Middle Ages actually held the Faith, unlike most Catholics today, so they actually believed in the Devil!

The question on the New Rites came from a sedevacantist, obviously hoping that he would denounce them as invalid. No such luck for the sede. Whilst he readily admits the many, many problems with them, and his personal preference for the Old Rites, he says that the proof of the pudding is in the eating. He then mentions that there have been at least five verified Eucharistic Miracles, which he discusses in his book A Catholic Quest for the Holy Grail, which I reviewed here and Mr Roger Buck reviewed here, that have all taken place in the last 25 years. This means that the Mass which produced these miracles is obviously a true, valid Catholic Mass in which Our Lord becomes present on the Altar, Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity.

He then points out that the Priests who celebrated these Masses were ordained using the Ordinal of Paul VI. If the New Ordinal is invalid, they were nothing but laymen. If they were nothing but laymen, they could not confect the Sacrament. Ergo, both the New Rite of Ordination and the Mass of Pope Paul VI are valid Catholic Rites. Q.E.D.

The discussion of the Cuban independence movement  is short, because it doesn't take him much time to point out that it was Masonically inspired and backed by the anti-Catholic United States. He does point out something of which I was unaware. In 1897, the year before the US went to war with Spain to install a Freemasonic government on the island, Spain had granted Cuba autonomy within the Spanish Empire. If the US hadn't invaded Cuba, would the Spanish Empire have developed into a Spanish Commonwealth as the British Empire became the British Commonwealth?

The last question is an interesting discussion of law enforcement in the Middle Ages, the King's Peace and the Ban of the Empire, evolving into a discussion of the governance of the Later Holy Roman Empire after the Thirty Years War.

Comments are subject to deletion if they are not germane. I have no problem with a bit of colourful language, but blasphemy or depraved profanity will not be allowed. Attacks on the Catholic Faith will not be tolerated. Comments will be deleted that are republican (Yanks! Note the lower case 'r'!), attacks on the legitimacy of Pope Francis as the Vicar of Christ (I know he's a material heretic and a Protector of Perverts, and I definitely want him gone yesterday! However, he is Pope, and I pray for him every day.), the legitimacy of the House of Windsor or of the claims of the Elder Line of the House of France, or attacks on the legitimacy of any of the currently ruling Houses of Europe.
