Off the Menu: Episode 22 - Universalism, Napoleon, & Romance

Originally uploaded on 11 April 2017.

The first question is on Hans Urs von Balthasar's heretical theory of universalism, which the Chevalier dismisses as contradicting Scripture and Tradition. He points out that God sends no one to hell, but man chooses to do his own will, thereby choosing hell.

The answer on the rights of Englishmen is illuminating. He's asked if the 'rights of Englishmen' were an 'improvement' on the Catholic paradigm. He answers, no, pointing out that they were the rights of Catholic Englishmen that have been diminished by the heretics since the Deformation.

He discusses the 'Matters' of mediaeval romance, of Britain, of France, of Rome, and of Jerusalem. He contrasts them with Greek drama and the Norse sagas, chuckling that the difference is that romance was Catholic! Asked what the greatest modern 'romance' might be, he answers without hesitation the Lord of the Rings, pointing out that Tolkien was deeply immersed in the Catholic romance of the middle ages.

The discussion of Bonaparte leads into a discussion of Hitler in which he points out that if one ignores the Holocaust, Hitler would be welcome in the halls of power today. He was anti-smoking, pro-animal rights, the list goes on and on.

He also explains that Napoleon, Hitler, Stalin, and Mao were all heirs of and inspired by the Revolution and were in a sense were steps downward to chaos.

I've shared the excerpt of the Quiet Revolution before. He explains how Quebec turned its back on Catholicism and has fallen into a left-wing morass. He compares it to the same descent that Ireland has gone through in the last few decades.

Comments are subject to deletion if they are not germane. I have no problem with a bit of colourful language, but blasphemy or depraved profanity will not be allowed. Attacks on the Catholic Faith will not be tolerated. Comments will be deleted that are republican (Yanks! Note the lower case 'r'!), attacks on the legitimacy of Pope Francis as the Vicar of Christ (I know he's a material heretic and a Protector of Perverts, and I definitely want him gone yesterday! However, he is Pope, and I pray for him every day.), the legitimacy of the House of Windsor or of the claims of the Elder Line of the House of France, or attacks on the legitimacy of any of the currently ruling Houses of Europe.
