Off the Menu: Episode 20 - Japanese, Distributism, and Arianism

Originally uploaded on 9 March 2017.

The Chevalier discusses three questions regarding Catholicism in Japan. It's fascinating, and I learned that tempura, battered and fried seafood, is actually of Portuguese origin, introduced by Catholic missionaries.

His discussion of the Netherlands is great. He points out that prior to the 1939-1945 War and the Council, Dutch society was compartmentalised between Catholic, protestant, and liberal. It was so complete that if a man told you what pigeon fanciers club he belonged to and which football club he supported, you could determine his religion.

He explains the wide variants of modern Calvinism, from the liberals of Holland, through Norman Vincent Peale and the 'prosperity gospel', Robert Schuler and the Crystal Cathedral, to the racists of South Africa who invented apartheid.

I have shared his explanation of Distributism before, but it is excellent. He simply points out what it is and how it conforms to Catholic Social Teaching. He then discusses the difficulties in establishing Distributism in a State.

I believe I've shared the discussion of the modern crisis compared to Arianism. I would be curious what his answer would be today. He mentions only the Order of Malta and the Dubia on Francis's heresy in Amoris Laetitia. Even with only those, he blasts the clergy of the modern Church, and says that today is as bad as the Arian crisis. Now that we have the homosexual and Lavender Mafia crisis the comparison is even more apt. He actually gets angry in this section!
