If your guardian angel is truly there, why does he never speak? Most people assume that if an angel really spoke, it would sound like a voice you could record and play back. When nothing like that ever happens, they quietly conclude their angel is silent, or that they are simply not spiritual enough to notice him. The Church has always taught something stranger than that, and far more comforting. Your guardian angel has been speaking to you since the day you were born, in a language you already know how to read. You were simply never told who was speaking it. In the Hebrew scriptures, the word for angel, malakh, means messenger.
Long before Christ, God told Moses he was sending an angel to guard the people: obey his voice, for my name is in him. In Tobit, a Jewish book found among the Dead Sea Scrolls in Hebrew and Aramaic, the archangel Raphael travels for weeks beside young Tobias disguised as an ordinary companion named Azariah. The disguise was never a trick. It was the design. God trains us to recognize the supernatural inside the ordinary, not instead of it. So tonight, pray the words many of us learned as children: Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God's love commits me here. Then pay attention tomorrow. You were never as alone as you thought. You were only ever unintroduced.
