WHO WERE THE JACOBITES and how did they lose the throne, then try to regain it? This is the crazy story of Britain’s other royal family; the male-line descendants of James II of England/James VII of Scotland, known to history as Jacobites. In this Stuart royal history documentary from History Calling, I’ll take you through the Glorious Revolution of 1688, when King James was deposed in favour of his daughter and son-in-law/nephew, Mary II and William III then explain what happened to James II and his wife, Mary of Modena, plus their infant son, Prince James Francis Edward Stuart, Prince of Wales. We’ll look at why and how the Hanoverians got the throne after the death of Queen Anne in 1714 (get ready to learn about the Act of Settlement of 1701) and the 1715 uprising, when Prince James (by then recognised as James III by Catholic Europe and known to history as the Old Pretender and the King across the water) tried to retake the throne. I’ll also dicuss his later marriage to Maria Clementina Sobieska and the lives of their sons, Prince Charles Edward Stuart (known to history as the Young Pretender, Bonnie Prince Charlie and even King Charles III) and Prince Henry Benedict Stuart, who became a Catholic cardinal and is informally known as King Henry IX by some. We’ll then examine the 1745 Rebellion and the Battle of Culloden in 1746 (made even more famous by Outlander), before finishing with the story of Charles’s illegitimate daughter, the last Stuart, Charlotte Stuart, Duchess of Albany.
