Leopold II Of Belgium - The King Who Committed Genocide
Leopold II of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha was born on April 9, 1835 in Brussels and died on December 17, 1909 at Laeken Castle in Brussels, Belgium. He was Prince of Belgium until 1865, and succeeded his father Leopold I on the throne of the Kingdom of Belgium. He was King of the Belgians from 1865 to 1909.
Leopold was a supporter of colonialist ideas and founded the officially independent Congo Free State in Central Africa, of which he was absolute monarch and personal owner. At that time, mainly ivory and rubber were exported from the Congo. The local population was cruelly mistreated and exploited in the process.
