The British Empire was simply the largest and most successful empire of the modern age. Starting out with footholds in the Caribbean and North America, Britain went on to win control of Canada in the French & Indian War, conquered India and ruled Africa from the Cape to Cairo. Expanding and defending this empire often meant war and British Imperial forces proved their worth on battlefields such as the American Revolutionary War, the Napoleonic Wars, the Indian Mutiny, the Boer War, numerous colonial conflicts and two World Wars. Some of the famous names featured from the pantheon of British heroes include the Duke of Marlborough, James Wolfe, Clive of India, Robert Ross, Samuel Hood, Richard Howe, Sir John Moore, Sir Ralph Abercromby, the Duke of Wellington, Lord Nelson, "Chinese" Gordon, Lord Kitchener, Douglas Haig, Sir Martin Dunbar-Naismith (captain of the RN sub E-11) and Bernard Law Montgomery.

Comments are subject to deletion if they are not germane. I have no problem with a bit of colourful language, but blasphemy or depraved profanity will not be allowed. Attacks on the Catholic Faith will not be tolerated. Comments will be deleted that are republican (Yanks! Note the lower case 'r'!), attacks on the legitimacy of Pope Francis as the Vicar of Christ (I know he's a material heretic and a Protector of Perverts, and I definitely want him gone yesterday! However, he is Pope, and I pray for him every day.), the legitimacy of the House of Windsor or of the claims of the Elder Line of the House of France, or attacks on the legitimacy of any of the currently ruling Houses of Europe.
