The Sky is Where It Has Always Been

OMM reacts to the absolutely horrifying news that 'Call me Bishop Bob' McElroy is being elevated to the Cardinalate. May God have mercy on His Church!

From One Mad Mom

Breathe, people! The sky is not falling. Like you, I woke up to the abysmal news that Bishop McElroy has been named to be elevated to cardinal. Sorry, I’m not shocked at all. I predicted Bishop McElroy would be made cardinal this year https://onemadmom.foedus.co/one-mad-moms-predictions-for-2022/ (and geez, many of these have come to pass). Although tongue in cheek, (and, no, I didn’t actually think it would be D.C.) it was kind of obvious this was going down. To heck with the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and all of the Hispanics who have been waiting for their guy to finally be named cardinal in a diocese that has had a cardinalship for decades. Of course they were going with Bp. McElroy, because it made so much sense in the Dirty 5 Dozen’s scheme.

The reactions have been rather hysterical.

Pope Francis named Bishop Robert McElroy of San Diego as one of the 21 new cardinals on Sunday, passing over the higher-ranking archbishop of San Francisco, Salvatore Cordileone.

Wow! Again, the one who was really passed over was Archbishop Gomez in the biggest Catholic populated diocese in the country and president of the USCCB by vote of his peers. Also, it’s probably the biggest Hispanic Catholic diocese in the United States, which makes this an extra BIG slap in the face. He would have been the first Mexican born cardinal in the United States. So much for the diversity we’re always hearing about. They went for clericalism instead.

New cardinal, Bishop Robert McElroy, is firmly opposed to denying communion to pro-choice politicians saying the Eucharist must not be weaponised for political ends. The Pope’s appointment of McElroy sends a strong message to the US hierarchy…

So, what Charles is saying is that, in the nine days since Archbishop Cordileone barred Pelosi from Communion, he plucked Bishop McElroy out of obscurity and made him a cardinal as payback instead of choosing Archbishop Gomez, who himself showed nary and ounce of support to Archbishop Cordileone? Oooooookay. Come on now. We all know this decision didn’t happen in the last nine days. Bishop McElroy has been groomed by the Dirty 5 Dozen to take a spot like this and has been their lapdog for quite a while. In fact, I should have seen the decision as imminent when I asked a priest friend in the San Diego diocese why Bishop McElroy had been so darn quiet as of late. Duh. They were trying to keep him from tanking any appointment.

This is one of my favs:

What must their Graces Cordileone, Aquila, Naumann, Paprocki, Strickland, Sample, Daly, Chaput et al. think about their “brother” Bishop McElroy of San Diego getting the red hat, while they’re stuck with purple?! 21 new cardinals, including key allies

Whoa, ho, ho! You know what they think? The same thing they think yesterday. “God’s will be done!” This is very unlike you and your ilk, who are company men who focus solely on promotions instead of souls, but thanks for making it quite obvious with this little tweet.

Here’s a whale of a tale:

Great news. Bishop McElroy is one of the most intelligent and insightful figures in the US Church.

If intelligence means he knows how to be a Cardinal Cupich lapdog, nailed it! This is the man who thought it would be a good idea to leak a private deanery meeting where he said, as an auxiliary bishop to Archbishop Cordileone, that the archbishop didn’t ask him for his opinion before he made an appointment of a priest. Too bad he was countered by the other priests in his deanery. https://onemadmom.foedus.co/lions-and-altar-boys-and-conservative-parishes-oh-my/

And then, honestly, this is my absolute fav:

“No word of congratulations You Grace for your former auxiliary Robert McElroy who was named a Cardinal today by the Pontifex Maximus?! 😉

I found out about the appointment of Bishop McElroy about 10:30 AM. I’m just guessing Archbishop Cordileone has a bit more to do on Sunday mornings than I do. How dare he actually post about the feast day at 8AM before he congratulated Bishop McElroy! How dare he (said in my best Greta Thunberg voice)! Seriously, this goofball is suggesting that A) Archbishop Cordileone check up on the latest news on Sunday morning and B) Congratulate Bishop McElroy before paying homage to Our Lord. That kind of shows you the mindset of the Bishop McElroy club.

While many of us hoped Archbishop Cordileone would be made a cardinal because, well, he’s amazingly faithful, how many of us thought that the cardinalship would suddenly be moved? And, like I said, many of us knew that Bishop McElroy was being groomed for the next spot. As I’ve also tweeted, God writes in crooked lines (and crooked cardinals). He will be victorious no matter what appointments occur. I feel very good about this and I’ll explain why at a future date.
