Is the Novus Ordo a Different Religion?

This post was inspired by an exchange on FishEaters Forum. One person said, 'In my opinion, Novus Ordo is a different religion than Catholicism'. Another member responded, 'That said, the NO is not a different religion. It's still the Catholic faith...'.

And my response:

I used to unequivocally agree, but I'm not sure we can say that anymore. Francis made it quite clear that the NO is the 'unique expression of the lex orandi of the Roman Rite'. He used 'unica' in the original Italian, 'unique' in the English translation, and 'unica' in the official Latin. (Italian: l’unica espressione della lex orandi del Rito Romano. English: unique expression of the lex orandi of the Roman Rite. Latin: unica expressio “legis orandi” Ritus Romani sunt.)

The Collins Italian/English Dictionary defines 'unica' as 'only'. Merriam-Webster defines 'unique' as being the only one soleMy Latin/English dictionary defines 'unica' as 'only, sole, single, singular, unique'.

If what he says is true, it is obvious that the Pauline Rite expresses a different religion than does the Gregorian Rite. Since I am absolutely convinced that the Gregorian Rite expresses the lex orandi of the Catholic Church of the Roman Rite* as it has existed since the beginning, I'm not sure what the Novus Ordo expresses, but it is crystal clear to me that it is not the Catholic Faith.

*As it does of the Ambrosian Rite, the Mozarabic Rite, the Carmelite Rite, the Dominican Rite, and the Benedictine Rite since they all express the same Faith.

Comments are subject to deletion if they are not germane. I have no problem with a bit of colourful language, but blasphemy or depraved profanity will not be allowed. Attacks on the Catholic Faith will not be tolerated. Comments will be deleted that are republican (Yanks! Note the lower case 'r'!), attacks on the legitimacy of Pope Francis as the Vicar of Christ (I know he's a material heretic and a Protector of Perverts, and I definitely want him gone yesterday! However, he is Pope, and I pray for him every day.), the legitimacy of the House of Windsor or of the claims of the Elder Line of the House of France, or attacks on the legitimacy of any of the currently ruling Houses of Europe.
