Our Lady of Walsingham

Our Lady of Walsingham and all ye Saints and Martyrs of England, pray for the conversion of your land, that it may, once again, be Mary's Dowry!

From Complete Christianity

OLW2
O Mary, recall the solemn moment when Jesus, thy divine son, dying on the cross, confided us to thy maternal care. Thou art our mother, we desire ever to remain thy devout children. Let us therefore feel the effects of thy powerful intercession with Jesus Christ. Make thy name again glorious in the shrine once renowned throughout England by thy visits, favors, and many miracles.

Pray, O holy mother of God, for the conversion of England, and all her former colonies.

O blessed Mary, Mother of God, Our Lady of Walsingham, intercede for us.

Amen.

Our Lady of Walsingham is the Patroness of this blog, of England and of all the English-speaking people. She is venerated both in Catholicism and Anglicanism. The devotion comes from a Marian apparition given to Lady Richeldis de Faverches in 1061, in the village of Walsingham in Norfolk, England. You can read more about it here.

Our Lady of Walsingham is the Patroness of Medieval England (Mary’s Dowry) which was at that time the most Catholic nation in Europe. It was a place of pilgrimage and devotion for hundreds of years, with pilgrims coming from as far away as Scandinavia, northern Germany and France. If you lived anywhere in the British Isles during Medieval Times, you would be very familiar with the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham and the devotion associated with it.

During the reign of the Protestant King Henry VIII, and his Protestant daughter Queen Elizabeth I, the shrine was destroyed and the devotion to Our Lady of Walsingham was suppressed. Today, however, there has been a resurgence in the last 100 years. The devotion spread to Anglo-America (Canada and the USA) during the 20th century, and has since become the primary Patroness of the Personal Ordinariates of English Patrimony. The UK jurisdiction, the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham, is named after the apparition, and the US jurisdiction, the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter, is under the patronage of the apparition. The cathedral for the US jurisdiction is also named after the same: The Cathedral of Our Lady of Walsingham.

For English-speaking Catholics, the apparition of Our Lady of Walsingham has taken on a prophetic characteristic, and has come to symbolize the hopeful re-conversion of England to the Catholic Faith, along with all the offspring of her former colonies — the English-speaking people throughout the world. This blog is dedicated to that cause.

Comments are subject to deletion if they are not germane. I have no problem with a bit of colourful language, but blasphemy or depraved profanity will not be allowed. Attacks on the Catholic Faith will not be tolerated. Comments will be deleted that are republican (Yanks! Note the lower case 'r'!), attacks on the legitimacy of Pope Francis as the Vicar of Christ (I know he's a material heretic and a Protector of Perverts, and I definitely want him gone yesterday! However, he is Pope, and I pray for him every day.), the legitimacy of the House of Windsor or of the claims of the Elder Line of the House of France, or attacks on the legitimacy of any of the currently ruling Houses of Europe.
