From Everyday For Life Canada
The Premier of Alberta Rachael Notley and her New Democratic Party, NDP, tried to win another election by depicting the main opposition the UCP Jason Kenney as a biased, bigoted and anti-rights individual. It's was dirty politics and fake news as usual. The strategy was a total failure.
Instead, Albertans yesterday overwelmimgly gave Jason Kenney's United Conservative Party, UPC, a majority government. Kenney will be the new premier of Alberta. Albertans surely can't wait for a return to sanity and sensible politics.
Alberta's NDP could not run an effective campaign on their terrible record. Alberta has a high unemployment rate. Notley has demonized Alberta's bread and butter industry, the oil and gas sector. She did her best to make sure that pipelines to carry Alberta oil to Canada's East and West coasts would never be built. Notley has added the carbon tax to fight climate change. Alberta's economy is stagnant and Albertans have felt the pain during the years of NDP rule. So, the NDP could not go to the electorate on mismanagement of just about every file.
The NDP tried to win smearing Jason Kenney as a man who doesn't respect human rights. They depicted Kenny as one who dislikes those who identify as LGBTQ and all the other letters. But this character assassination did not work. Albertans are too smart too fall for the lies. They elected the UCP by a large majority.
An article posted on the NDP website criticizes Kenney: "He’s bragged about denying dying AIDS patients the right to see their partners in the hospital. He tried to reopen the debate on marriage equality and suggested that gays can marry 'just not each other.' He voted against giving basic human rights protections to transgender Canadians in 2011, 2012, and 2013. And he even wants to out LGBTQ to their parents before they’re ready." Actually Kenney wanted parents to be informed if their sons or daughters join a secret school gay/alliance club or if the student wished to transgender. There is nothing wrong with respecting parental rights and telling parents what their children are doing. But no, the NDP has fought against parental rights. This anti-human rights position helps to explain why they lost the election in a big way.
Imagine Kenney's character was attacked by going back to his university days when he dared to question the existence of LGTBQ groups. According to the NDP, GSAs are just about "friendship, acceptance, and support." So, what is Kenney afraid of they ask? This is a scare mongering tactic to get votes. Kenney isn't afraid of anything. He simply had another view. And thank God it didn't work because the UPC prevailed.
The NDP in order to discredit the Kenney conservatives called the UPC a "far wing party." It didn't work. The NDP wanted a more "progressive" future. It didn't work. The NDP asked voters to "join the fight for Alberta's future" but Albertans chose instead Kennney and the UCP. Albertans handed the UCP a majority government and rejected identity and divisive politics. There is a lesson here in for Justin Trudeau and the federal Liberal party.
Finally, watch the short video and see how even the CBC Kids News joined the act. The CBC uses activist Jane MacNeil from Calgary to criticize Jason Kenney's position that teachers should inform parents when their children join a gay/straight alliance at school. The CBC took sides by pushing for an NDP victory as the report clearly shows.
