VIGIL. The day or eve before a more or less prominent feast or solemnity. It was observed as a preparation for the following day with special offices and prayers and formerly with a fast, honoring the particular mystery of religion or the saint to be venerated on the feast day. The Church today observes solemn vigils for Christmas, Easter, and Pentecost. Although the number of such solemn vigils has been reduced since the Second Vatican Council, the Church still wants the notion of vigils to be kept alive in the minds of the faithful. Thus “it is fitting that Bible services on the vigils of great feasts, on certain ferial days of Lent and Advent, on Sundays and feastdays, should also have the same structure as the liturgy of the Word at Mass” (Inter Oecumenici, 1964, 38). (Etym. Latin vigilia, from vigil, alert)

Some of us still keep fast on the vigils of the great Feasts. The last sentence of Father's definition points out another failing of the Council. By abolishing the fast on the vigil and trying to substitute 'Bible services', in reality, they simply abolished the vigil. In almost 40 years as a Catholic, I have not known one, single Parish to hold a 'Bible service' on a vigil. I doubt that, outside the Traditionalist communities, that one in a hundred Catholics knows what a 'vigil' is.

Attacks on the Catholic Faith will not be tolerated. Comments will be deleted that are republican (Yanks! Note the lower case 'r'!), attacks on the legitimacy of Pope Francis as the Vicar of Christ (I know he's a material heretic and a Protector of Perverts, and I definitely want him gone yesterday! However, he is Pope, and I pray for him every day.), the legitimacy of the House of Windsor or of the claims of the Elder Line of the House of France, or attacks on the legitimacy of any of the currently ruling Houses of Europe.
