Off the Menu: Episode 25 - Mythos, Saints, & Angels

All the questions are from a single questioner, by the 'handle' of 'Habsburg'.

I have to totally agree with the Chevalier in his preference for DC Comics over Marvel. There's no contest!

He says he has no real 'favourite' mythology, being fascinated by them all. However, he adds that all the mythologies actually foreshadow the Gospel, relating the various myths that tell of resurrection, the Universal Flood story that exists in every society, etc.

In discussing the Christian influences on pagan mythologies, he points out that the 'gods' of the pagans all died, but the lesser beings, fairies, elves, etc. survived in Catholic folklore.

The explanation of the Tuatha Dé Danann I found fascinating because I personally find Irish pagan mythology greatly interest. The Chevalier claims to be an agnostic on the existence of the Tuatha, but he does not dismiss the folklore.

He brings in the story of Heinrich Schliemann and Troy. Troy was dismissed as 'legend' until Schliemann used the 'folklore' of Homer to discover the ruins of the actual Troy.

The Sidhe and UFOs? Who knows? He recommends a book to do further reading.

The question on 'Common vs Scholastic' approaches to folklore is a bit misleading. The term 'scholastic' should be 'academic' and the Chevalier, as usual, attacks 'modern scholarship' as well he should!

I have shared the question on Charlemagne before. It is a fascinating discussion. The Chevalier points out that it is his Name Day if anyone wants to send gifts! It's also the Name Day of my middle son, Charles.

On Constantine, the argument is complicated, but as he points out, a Saint in the Eastern Catholic Churches is a Saint, period! St Constantine, Equal to the Apostles, Pray for us!

'St Uriel' is not found in any Canonical Scripture, but the Chevalier admits that he has an approved cultus in certain Dioceses. He discusses the various Choirs of Angels and their duties. He also discusses the Opus Angelorum and the fact that they were disciplined for teaching that people could 'name' their Guardian Angels.

This discussion leads naturally into the last question in which he talks about the role of Angels in governing creation, with a special mention of the Angelic Doctor and his teachings on the subject. He also gets a few digs in at 'modern science' (or 'scientism' as C.S. Lewis called it, and is the term which I prefer). He also gets in a few pointed remarks about Teilhard de Chardin (the only 'scientist' quoted by Francis in his heretical 'green' Encyclical Laudato si), saying that whilst people claimed that he had brought religion and science together, de Chardin was not good at either one.

Comments are subject to deletion if they are not germane. I have no problem with a bit of colourful language, but blasphemy or depraved profanity will not be allowed. Attacks on the Catholic Faith will not be tolerated. Comments will be deleted that are republican (Yanks! Note the lower case 'r'!), attacks on the legitimacy of Pope Francis as the Vicar of Christ (I know he's a material heretic and a Protector of Perverts, and I definitely want him gone yesterday! However, he is Pope, and I pray for him every day.), the legitimacy of the House of Windsor or of the claims of the Elder Line of the House of France, or attacks on the legitimacy of any of the currently ruling Houses of Europe.
