I'm sorry there haven't been many posts today, but an old friend I'd not seen for over 20 years is on holiday taking his family through the Great Plains State, and today was Lincoln, NE.
I got up early (for me) and we drove up to Lincoln. We stopped at what the Cuter&Shorter Half calls the 'Hippy Grocery', Open Harvest, a natural foods co-op. Barry called us as they came into town, and when he found out where we were he said he wanted to check it out, and they'd meet us there. He's a long time member of the similiar co-op in our mutual old home town, Lawrence, KS, the Community Mercantile.
After our shopping, we took in the State Capitol. It is, to my knowledge, the only State Capitol of it's design, with most of the others being neo-classical buildings similar to the Federal Capitol in Washington DC. It also houses the only unicameral legislature in the US, tho' it was built with a chamber for each of two Houses, the building being finished five years before Nebraska adopted the unicameral model.
Here's a link to the Nebraska State Capitol on the Nebraska Government website. Wikipedia also has an in depth article on the building, its history, and the art it contains, Nebraska State Capitol.
After seeing the Capitol, our friends treated us to lunch at a very nice Indian restaurant in the old Haymarket district of downtown Lincoln, The Oven. An excellent choice, since they are Jewish and keep kosher, and the C&S H is a vegetarian. We had a variety of delicious dishes, vegetarian, lamb, and shrimp (for me, obviously!).
As the C&S H and I were walking to the restaurant, I noticed that my absolutely favourite shop in all of Lincoln (and possibly in the world!), Licorice International. was across the street. I mentioned it to Barry's wife Robin, who it turned out is also a liquorice lover. So after lunch, we all crossed the street and checked it out. I hadn't actually been in the shop for over a year, subsisting on Good'n'Plenty and ordinary American liquorice twists. As a result, I decided to honour my three ancestral countries. I bought Läkerol salmiak pastilles from Sweden, some Pontefract cakes from England, and a bag of Salzige Heringe (salty herring) from Germany.
After the liquorice shop, Barry and his family were going to take in the Museum of American Speed, but the Old Curmudgeon's hip was bothering him, so we headed home, stopping in Crete to hit the thrift shop. Home now.
It was a fun day, but tiring. Back to normal posting tonight and tomorrow.

Comments are subject to deletion if they are not germane. I have no problem with a bit of colourful language, but blasphemy or depraved profanity will not be allowed. Attacks on the Catholic Faith will not be tolerated. Comments will be deleted that are republican (Yanks! Note the lower case 'r'!), attacks on the legitimacy of Pope Francis as the Vicar of Christ (I know he's a material heretic and a Protector of Perverts, and I definitely want him gone yesterday! However, he is Pope, and I pray for him every day.), the legitimacy of the House of Windsor or of the claims of the Elder Line of the House of France, or attacks on the legitimacy of any of the currently ruling Houses of Europe.
