Everyone knows how the story of Fatima begins. Before our Lady, the Angel of Fatima appeared to three shepherd children with a chalice. Calling himself the Angel of Peace and the Angel of Portugal, he visited them three times during the dark days of 1916. He bowed his face to the ground, placed holy Communion upon their lips, and taught them the very prayers that shaped everything that followed. Yet modern accounts have almost completely forgotten him. Why would a messenger from heaven prostrate in the dust before the host, and what does his prologue reveal about the real message of Fatima?
The answer is rooted deep in the Hebrew Scriptures. In the book of Daniel, heavenly princes stand guard over nations, and biblical history reveals an unbroken pattern: God never sends a great mission without first sending a messenger to prepare the way. Just as an angel woke the prophet Elijah with bread in the wilderness, and an angel strengthened Christ in Gethsemane before the chalice of His Passion, this heavenly guardian came to prepare Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta for a mission that would demand their entire lives. When you recover this forgotten prologue, Fatima is transformed from a distant miracle into an immediate summons to Eucharistic adoration, silent sacrifice, and faithful reparation before the altar.
