How fast could the longbowmen of Agincourt really shoot — and does armour change everything? In this video, we put it to the test with three live speed shoots using a 70lb medieval war bow, timing exactly how many arrows can be loosed in one minute.
Starting in a simple doublet and hose — the light kit favoured by the English and Welsh archers of Agincourt, Crécy and Poitiers — then add a jack, kettle helmet and maille before finishing in a full breastplate and sallet. The numbers tell a fascinating story.
Join Kevin Hicks, former professional medieval bowman at Warwick Castle......this is as hands-on as history gets.
