Many Protestants believe Catholics invented Mary's exalted role in the Middle Ages. But the Old Testament itself — in the Greek text Luke actually used — creates the connection between Mary and Moses's tabernacle. And it comes down to a single rare word.
THE KEY WORD:
Luke 1:35 — "The power of the Most High will overshadow you"
Greek word: episkiazō
It appears only 5 times in the entire New Testament
The only Old Testament (Septuagint) usage describing God's presence: Exodus 40:35 — when the cloud overshadowed the tabernacle
Luke chose this rare word deliberately. That's not Catholic imagination — that's the text
THE TABERNACLE PARALLEL:
Exodus 40:34,35: The cloud covered the tent, the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle, and Moses could not enter
Luke 1:35: The Holy Spirit comes upon Mary, and the power of the Most High overshadows her
Same word. Same divine presence. New dwelling place.
THE ARK OF THE COVENANT PARALLELS (Luke 1/2 Samuel 6):
Elizabeth asks: "How is it that the mother of my Lord should come to me?"
David asked: "How can the ark of the Lord come to me?" (2 Sam 6:9)
Mary stayed 3 months — the same time the ark stayed with Obed-Edom
John leaps in the womb — like David dancing before the ark
Same chapter of Luke. Not subtle. Deliberate.
WHAT MARY CONTAINED vs. WHAT THE TABERNACLE CONTAINED:
Stone tablets of the Law → The Word made flesh (the Law incarnate)
Jar of manna → The Bread of Life (the true manna)
Aaron's budding staff → The eternal High Priest (whom Aaron prefigured)
THE CHURCH FATHERS:
St. Athanasius (4th c.): Mary is the tabernacle from which Christ came forth
St. Ephraim the Syrian: Mary is the living ark
St. Ambrose: Mary is the ark containing the Word
CCC 484: Connects Mary's overshadowing directly to the Incarnation
CCC 2676: Calls Mary "the dwelling place where the glory of the Lord dwells"
John 1:14 CONFIRMS IT:
"The Word became flesh and dwelt among us" — Greek: skēnoō — literally "pitched his tent." Tabernacled. John makes the same connection Luke makes. Jesus is the Shekinah. Mary is the tabernacle.
OBJECTION ANSWERED:
"Episkiazō is just general divine power language, not a tabernacle reference"
→ The word is extremely rare. Its only OT usage describing God's presence is Exodus 40:35. Luke, writing for Greek-speaking Jews who knew their scriptures, chose this word precisely because of its tabernacle resonance. Add the visitation parallels to 2 Samuel 6 — in the same chapter — and the cumulative evidence is overwhelming. This isn't Catholics inventing a connection. It's Luke creating one.
