Today and tomorrow, the Sacred College will hold a meeting, which was requested during the pre-conclave congregations. The main topics will be the Synod, synodality, and liturgy, but Bergoglio's method of working groups will remain unchanged.
After closing the Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica, the Pope had only a few hours of rest before another important appointment. The first extraordinary consistory of his pontificate will begin in the early afternoon. Cardinals residing in Rome and those arriving from around the world will begin receiving badges and documentation at 12:30 p.m. in the atrium of the Paul VI Hall.
The members of the Sacred College are meeting again after the historic days of April and May, from the funeral of Francis to the installation Mass of Leo XIV, through the congregations and the conclave. The convocation of this consistory came on November 7 in response to a request made to the newly elected Pope during the first meeting in the New Synod Hall.
After Bergoglio's twelve-year pontificate, characterized by small and exclusive bodies such as the C9 (later C6) [the exclusive group of 6 and 9 cardinals], the Sacred College reclaimed its role, complaining to the new pope that it had been excluded from decisions concerning the government of the Church. Prevost accepted their requests, convening this consistory to review certain documents of the papal Magisterium, in particular Evangelii Gaudium and Praedicate Evangelium, and, above all, to discuss two topics of particular relevance: the Synod and synodality, as well as the liturgy. Leone decided not to waste time and to immediately address two of the thorniest issues in ecclesial life with his confreres: the Synod and synodality, as well as the liturgy.
Many hoped that during these two days, the atmosphere of parrhesia that had been partially rediscovered in the pre-conclave congregations but had been absent during the years of Pope Francis' pontificate would return.
