Within hours of Hitler's return to Austria, Maximilian, Duke of Hohenberg, Franz Ferdinand's son, would go from being the human face of the state to being called an enemy of the state and being sent to a Nazi concentration camp.
Hitler’s hatred against the Habsburg Empire, the dead Archduke and his children was deep, and he hated everything they built in six centuries: an empire with twelve distinct nationalities, hundreds of ethnic groups, countless traditions and religions, and over 50 million people.
