The History of the Papal Conclave

In this longer than usual documentary I look at the history of the Papal Conclave, the process of electing a new Pope, a new Bishop of Rome. I look at how papal elections developed and evolved, and how the secretive process that is the hallmark of the conclave today, grew out of many centuries of conflict and difficulty, as the papacy grappled with the demands of internal and external power. I also talk through the key elements of the modern conclave and what goes on behind the closed doors of the Sistine chapel.

Comments are subject to deletion if they are not germane. I have no problem with a bit of colourful language, but blasphemy or depraved profanity will not be allowed. Attacks on the Catholic Faith will not be tolerated. Comments will be deleted that are republican (Yanks! Note the lower case 'r'!), attacks on the legitimacy of Pope Leo XIV as the Vicar of Christ, the legitimacy of the House of Windsor or of the claims of the Elder Line of the House of France, or attacks on the legitimacy of any of the currently ruling Houses of Europe.
