God Chastises Israelites for Wanting a King

I have enjoyed Charles's works on monarchism, and he is close to making me a monarchist himself. However, one of my biggest hang-ups about monarchism is the very dubious nature in which it is treated in Holy Scripture. In 1 Kings Ch. 8, God Himself chastises the Hebrews for desiring a king, and tells them all the horrible things they will suffer at the hands of the kings. The next 3.5 books see these come to pass. It is hard to read the above passage, and the rest of the books of Kings, without thinking that God Himself is opposed to monarchy. How does Charles reconcile this very equivocal position given to monarchs in the Bible? More importantly, how has the Church reconciled this passage from 1 Kings 8 with Her long preference for monarchy?

  1. Well Jesus is King of Kings not president of presidents and Jesus himself said the kingdom of heaven is at hand not the republic of heaven

  2. The desire for a king In today's world brings two things to mind : be careful what you wish for and don't give them any ideas

Comments are subject to deletion if they are not germane. I have no problem with a bit of colourful language, but blasphemy or depraved profanity will not be allowed. Attacks on the Catholic Faith will not be tolerated. Comments will be deleted that are republican (Yanks! Note the lower case 'r'!), attacks on the legitimacy of Pope Francis as the Vicar of Christ (I know he's a material heretic and a Protector of Perverts, and I definitely want him gone yesterday! However, he is Pope, and I pray for him every day.), the legitimacy of the House of Windsor or of the claims of the Elder Line of the House of France, or attacks on the legitimacy of any of the currently ruling Houses of Europe.
