Charles IX of France was born on June 27, 1550 at the Château of Saint-Germain-en-Laye and died on May 30, 1574 at the Château of Vincennes. He was king of France from 1560 to 1574.
He was the fourth king of the Valois-Angoulême family. As a son of Henri II and Catherine de’ Medici, he succeeded his brother François II at the age of 10 and died without legitimate male children at the age of 24.
During his reign, the kingdom was torn apart by the French Wars of Religion, despite the efforts of his mother Catherine to prevent them. After several attempts at reconciliation, the religious turmoil lead to the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre.
