When Do the O Antiphons Start in Advent?

They begin this year on Saturday. I will have a daily post on each of them with the antiphon in Latin & English, the verse of the famous hymn based on them, & a bit of its history.

From Aleteia

By Philip Kosloski

The O Antiphons begin seven days prior to the celebration of Christmas.

Ever since the 8th century, the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church has celebrated the last seven days of Advent with what are called the “O Antiphons.” These verses are traditionally sung during Evening Prayer, but have also been featured in the popular Advent hymn, “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.“

Normally one antiphon is sung per day, from December 17 through December 23. The dates for each antiphon are printed below, as well as a few articles that offer some commentary on the tradition.

December 17: O Sapientia — O Wisdom
December 18: O Adonai — O Lord
December 19: O Radix Jesse — O Root of Jesse
December 20: O Clavis David — O Key of David
December 21: O Oriens — O Dayspring
December 22: O Rex Gentium — O King of the Nations
December 23: O Emmanuel — O God with Us

Comments are subject to deletion if they are not germane. I have no problem with a bit of colourful language, but blasphemy or depraved profanity will not be allowed. Attacks on the Catholic Faith will not be tolerated. Comments will be deleted that are republican (Yanks! Note the lower case 'r'!), attacks on the legitimacy of Pope Leo XIV as the Vicar of Christ, the legitimacy of the House of Windsor or of the claims of the Elder Line of the House of France, or attacks on the legitimacy of any of the currently ruling Houses of Europe.
