Canada Moving to Only Government Approved Journalist

The Trudeau Liberal government will now license journalists in Canada. This is a terrible move for Canadians. Media should basically govern itself through healthy competition and self-regulation. When the government legislates the certification of journalists, then the accusation of fake news is no longer a mere accusation. There is a huge danger that the news won't be reported in a balanced and responsible manner.

Canadians will not be able to trust the MSM. The Trudeau government claims that they have to regulate the media because of "misinformation" and "disinformation" coming from so many platforms, blogs and alternative news sources. But if the government ultimately decides which news organization get a license and which do not, it will be primarily responsible for the "misinformation" and disinformation" made available to Canadians. Who appointed the government to be the arbiter of acceptable and unacceptable news?

Media that is funded and monitored by the government isn't likely to question the hand that feeds and licenses them. With government media regulation, Canada will have only government approved journalists. There is a great risk to this: only the government political narrative will be permissible in the public square. This is a terrible development for democracy, freedom and civil rights.

Rebel News is taking the government to court over the issue. The Canada Revenue Agency has made the decision not to grant Rebel News a license to do journalism. The CRA claims that Rebel News has only 1% of news in its reporting. How was that decision made? This presents a serious danger to free speech and democracy. The consumer and healthy media competition should define what constitutes sound news and what doesn't, not the government. 

For the government to hand out journalism licences is to play politics with the media. This is not in the best interest of Canadians and for a healthy society. The government is actually putting restrictions on free speech by becoming a censor. If the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms means anything, media must tell different sides of the story and to protect the rights of Canadians to freedom of expression.

Let the market evaluate good journalism from the bad. Let Canadians consume the media they choose. Let media with high standards of accuracy and ethics battle against biased and sponsored journalism, either from the government or other organizations. The government must not tell Canadians the media the can and cannot trust.

It's not the business of the Trudeau government to be regulating and funding media with tax payer money. If Canada is to remain a free nation, an unbiased and independent media is a necessity. Let all sides of the story be told, and allow the public freely choose where the facts and truth are to be found. Giving media government licences is a form of censorship which limits freedom of expression and thought.

Elon Musk in his attempt to take over Twitter made a filing with the U.S Securities and Exchange Commission. In his statement, he makes this important point about free speech and democracy:

I invested in Twitter as I believe in its potential to be the platform for free speech around the globe, and I believe free speech is a societal imperative for a functioning democracy.

However, since making my investment I now realize the company will neither thrive nor serve this societal imperative in its current form. Twitter needs to be transformed as a private company.

As a result, I am offering to buy 100% of Twitter for $54.20 per share in cash, a 54% premium over the day before I began investing in Twitter and a 38% premium over the day before my investment was publicly announced. My offer is my best and final offer and if it is not accepted, I would need to reconsider my position as a shareholder. Twitter has extraordinary potential. I will unlock it.

The Trudeau government is moving Canada to only government approved journalist. Only time will tell. But to be forced to have the "qualified Canadian journalism organization” QCJO certification is for journalism to become government propaganda. It's a good thing that Rebel News is taking the government to court. We hope they win for all Canadians. For the rest of the media, including the state funded CBC, there is mostly silence. We don't have to tell you why.
