St Melaine of Rennes, Bishop & Confessor

From Saint for a Minute

Melaine of Rennes was Bishop of Rennes in Brittany in the 6th century. His family was Gallo-Roman, and he was born near Redon, in Plaz. After becoming a monk he founded a small monastery near his home and led it as abbot, and he was then named to follow Bishop Amand of Rennes. Tradition says the local people forced the office on him against his reluctance, that he worked many miracles and ended pagan customs, and that after his death a boat carried his body back to Rennes against the current with no rowers or sails. Clovis took over the region while Melaine was bishop, and Melaine became a trusted counsellor to him. He spoke against settlement from Britain, and he was at the First Council of Orléans in 511.

An account of him says he built a church with his own hands at Plácium on the Vilaine and gathered monks there. He died at Plaz in 530, and his body was placed in the abbey church of Notre-Dame en Saint-Mélaine in Rennes. Melaine is the main patron saint of the diocese of Rennes, and his feast day is 6 November.

Attacks on the Catholic Faith will not be tolerated. Comments will be deleted that are republican (Yanks! Note the lower case 'r'!), attacks on the legitimacy of Pope Leo XIV as the Vicar of Christ, the legitimacy of the House of Windsor or of the claims of the Elder Line of the House of France, or attacks on the legitimacy of any of the currently ruling Houses of Europe.
