Most Catholics believe a wedding is a celebration the couple designs around their own love story. Catholic wedding rules say something stranger. A wedding is a liturgy that belongs to the whole Church, and the couple step into it. They do not write it. Almost everyone watching has done at least one of these six things, and nobody in that room was being rebellious. The priest was not being difficult. They simply did not know the difference between a beautiful custom and an approved one. So here are all six, each with the exact document, so you can check every word yourself. This is older than the Church. In Jewish law the first stage of marriage is kiddushin, from a root meaning to be set apart, made holy, and the second stage is nissuin. That instinct, that marrying is a setting apart, sits underneath everything the Church still does at a wedding, which is why she does not need a couple to invent the meaning. She already gave it to them. The Book of Tobit shows the rest. Tobiah and Sarah faced a marriage haunted by real fear and did not reach for a charm. He did exactly what the angel Raphael instructed, then turned to her and said, let us pray and beg our Lord to have mercy on us.
