Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, magnificent Catholic churches rose across the United States. They were renowned for their intricate frescoes, soaring Gothic vaults, and majestic high altars. But in the wake of the Second Vatican Council, a wave of simplification swept through these sanctuaries. Masterpieces were painted over, and high altars were dismantled or banished to storage.
